10 Easy Tiki Cocktails to Make at Home

Bring a little tropical escapism to your home bar with these 10 easy tiki cocktails. From the classic Mai Tai to the mighty Zombie, these colourful rum cocktails are packed with fresh citrus, tropical fruit and plenty of island-inspired character.

You don’t need a professional cocktail bar or a cupboard full of obscure ingredients to make great tiki cocktails at home. With a couple of bottles of rum, fresh fruit juice, a cocktail shaker, plenty of crushed ice and some suitably outrageous tiki barware, you can transform an ordinary evening into a mini tropical getaway.

Whether you’re planning a garden party, entertaining friends or simply fancy something a little more adventurous after work, these easy tiki cocktail recipes are a great place to start.

What Do You Need to Make Tiki Cocktails?

One of the best things about tiki cocktails is that many recipes share the same basic ingredients. You don’t need to buy an entire cocktail bar to get started.

A good beginner’s tiki cocktail collection includes:

  • White rum
  • Dark or aged rum
  • Fresh limes
  • Fresh lemons
  • Pineapple juice
  • Orange juice
  • Passion-fruit syrup or purée
  • Orgeat syrup
  • Grenadine
  • Coconut cream
  • Ginger beer
  • Cocktail bitters
  • Crushed ice
  • Fresh mint
  • Tropical fruit for garnishing

Fresh citrus is worth the effort. Freshly squeezed lime and lemon juice can make a noticeable difference, adding brightness and balance that bottled juice often can’t quite match.

And don’t underestimate the importance of presentation. A colourful garnish and a fun ceramic tiki mug can turn even a simple rum cocktail into a centrepiece.

  1. The Classic Mai Tai

If you’re getting into tiki cocktails, the Mai Tai is the obvious place to begin.

The Mai Tai combines aged rum with fresh lime, orange curaçao and almond-flavoured orgeat. The result is citrusy, nutty, aromatic and beautifully balanced.

Ingredients

  • 30 ml aged Jamaican rum
  • 30 ml aged Martinique molasses rhum, or a second aged rum
  • 15 ml orange curaçao
  • 15 ml orgeat syrup
  • 30 ml fresh lime juice
  • 7.5 ml simple syrup
  • Crushed ice
  • Mint, lime and pineapple to garnish

Method

  1. Add the rum, orange curaçao, orgeat, lime juice and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker.
  2. Add ice and shake until thoroughly chilled.
  3. Pour into a rocks glass or tiki mug filled with crushed ice.
  4. Garnish with mint, lime and a pineapple spear.

Tiki tip: If your Mai Tai is too tart, add a tiny touch more syrup. Too sweet? A squeeze of fresh lime should bring everything back into balance.

Glassware Suggestion: Serve this classic up in our Ku Tiki Mug.

  1. Jungle Bird

Want a tiki cocktail that’s fruity without being overly sweet? Meet the Jungle Bird.

This tropical rum cocktail combines pineapple juice with dark rum, fresh lime and Campari. That bitter edge gives it considerably more character than your average fruit-forward cocktail.

  • 45 ml dark or blackstrap rum
  • 22.5 ml Campari
  • 45 ml pineapple juice
  • 15 ml fresh lime juice
  • 15 ml demerara syrup

Method

  1. Add all the ingredients to a shaker with ice.
  2. Shake until cold.
  3. Strain into a rocks glass or tiki mug filled with fresh ice.

  • 30 ml fresh lemon juice

  1. Navy Grog

The Navy Grog is a classic tiki cocktail for serious rum fans.

It’s citrusy, refreshing and powerful, combining three styles of rum with fresh lime and grapefruit juice, honey syrup and a little soda. The combination creates a surprisingly balanced drink despite its substantial rum base.

  • 30 ml dark Jamaican rum
  • 30 ml Demerara rum
  • 22.5 ml fresh lime juice

  1. Zombie

Few tiki cocktails have quite the reputation of the Zombie.

This legendary drink is famous for its complex combination of rums, citrus, spices and bitters. The original-style recipe is considerably more involved than some of the other drinks on this list, but it’s worth trying when you’re ready to take your home tiki bar to the next level.

  • 15 ml Don’s Mix
  • 15 ml falernum
  • 44 ml aged Jamaican rum

First, make Don’s Mix by combining two parts grapefruit juice with one part cinnamon syrup.

Then:

  1. Add all ingredients to a blender.
  2. Add crushed ice.
  3. Flash-blend for no more than around five seconds.
  4. Pour into a tall zombie or chimney glass.
  5. Add more crushed ice if required.
  6. Garnish with fresh mint.

Tiki warning: The Zombie is a strong cocktail. Treat it as a slow sipper and measure your spirits carefully.

Glassware Suggestion: Give this cocktail a little extra character by serving it in something a bit more macabre — our Shrunken Head Tiki Mug is the perfect choice.

  1. Dark ‘n’ Stormy

Sometimes you don’t need a complicated recipe to make a great tropical drink.

The Dark ‘n’ Stormy is wonderfully simple: dark rum, ginger beer and fresh lime. It’s spicy, refreshing and takes only a few minutes to assemble.

Ingredients

  • 50 ml dark rum
  • 100–150 ml ginger beer
  • 15 ml fresh lime juice
  • Ice
  • Lime wedge to garnish

  2. Add the lime juice and ginger beer.
  3. Slowly pour the dark rum over the top.
  4. Garnish with a lime wedge.
  5. Stir gently before drinking.

For extra character, choose a spicy ginger beer with plenty of ginger heat.

Glassware Suggestion: A Dark & Stormy calls for a tiki mug with plenty of character, and a classic Moai tiki mug is the perfect pairing for this bold, stormy cocktail.

  1. Tropical Rum Punch

This colourful combination of white rum, dark rum, pineapple, orange, lime and passion fruit can be prepared as individual cocktails or scaled up for a group.

  5. Garnish with pineapple, orange, lime and mint.

For a party-sized batch, combine everything except the ice and fresh garnishes in advance. Chill until you’re ready to serve.

Glassware Suggestion: Serving this cocktail in a sharing bowl makes it perfect for parties, and our Conch Shell Tiki Bowl is the ideal vessel for serving it in style.

Choosing the Right Tiki Mug

A tiki cocktail isn’t just about what’s inside the glass. Tiki barware is part of the experience.

A great tiki mug instantly adds personality to your cocktail and can make even a simple drink feel like an occasion.

Choose a smaller ceramic tiki mug for concentrated drinks such as a Mai Tai or Jungle Bird, while larger mugs work particularly well for creamy, fruit-heavy cocktails packed with crushed ice.

Mugs

Tiki bowls and sharing vessels are perfect for:

  • Rum punch
  • Scorpion-style cocktails
  • Large-format tiki drinks
  • Tropical party cocktails
  • Non-alcoholic tropical punches

When choosing a handmade tiki mug, consider its capacity, stability and how comfortable it is to hold. And, of course, don’t be afraid to choose something completely outrageous — that’s half the fun of tiki.

Easy Tiki Garnishes That Look Amazing

You don’t need professional bartending skills to make your tiki cocktails look impressive.

A few simple garnishes can completely transform the presentation.

Try:

  • Fresh mint
  • Lime wheels
  • Orange slices
  • Pineapple wedges
  • Maraschino cherries
  • Fresh passion fruit
  • Cinnamon sticks
  • Cocktail umbrellas
  • Reusable bamboo-style straws

Prepare fruit garnishes before your guests arrive and keep them chilled. Add delicate ingredients such as mint shortly before serving so they stay fresh and aromatic.

For an extra dramatic presentation, combine several garnishes — a pineapple wedge, mint sprig and cherry can instantly give a cocktail that unmistakable tiki-bar look.

Build Your Own Tiki Cocktail Menu

You don’t need a huge spirits collection to start making tiki cocktails at home.

Begin with:

White rum + dark rum + fresh limes + pineapple juice + orange juice + one or two syrups.

That small selection gives you the foundations for a surprising number of tropical cocktail recipes.

Planning a relaxed evening? Try Mai Tais and Jungle Birds.

Hosting a summer gathering? Make a big bowl of Tropical Rum Punch or Planter’s Punch.

Want something dramatic? Serve Painkillers or Zombies in eye-catching ceramic tiki mugs.

And if you’re building a proper home tiki bar, don’t forget the accessories. The right glassware, mugs, garnishes and crushed ice can turn cocktail-making into part of the entertainment.

Bring the Tiki Bar Home

The magic of tiki cocktails is that they’re about more than just the drink. They’re about escape, atmosphere, colour and having a little fun.

Fill a handmade tiki mug with crushed ice, add a colourful garnish, put on some tropical music and let your home bar transport you somewhere warmer.

Whether you’re a complete beginner or already obsessed with rum cocktails, there’s always another tiki recipe to discover.

Pick your cocktail. Grab your favourite tiki mug. Shake, pour, garnish and escape. 🌴🍹

Please enjoy alcohol responsibly. Measure spirits carefully, never drink and drive, and consider offering delicious non-alcoholic tropical drinks alongside your cocktails.

Hand-Sculpting the Original Master Behind Every Tiki Mug: Aloha, Creativity!

Grab a Mai Tai and pull up a bamboo stool — let’s talk about one of our favourite things in the whole wide (tiki) world: the hand-sculpted master mould behind every tiki mug we make. Machines and 3D printers can churn out a mug in minutes, but they’ll never capture what a real pair of hands can. Here’s the bit that tends to surprise people: every single design we produce starts life as one original, hand-sculpted piece — a true one-off, shaped entirely by hand — which then becomes the mould that every mug in that range is cast from. So while our mugs are produced in batches, every design you see traces back to a single, hands-on act of artistry. Fancy finding out how that one-off original comes together, from a rough sketch to a finished master? Pour yourself a cocktail and read on.

From Mahiki to Mugs: Our Island Origin Story

The whole adventure kicked off close to two decades back, when our team was part of the crew bringing London’s legendary Mahiki Tiki Bar to life. There was just one snag: proper tiki mugs were nowhere to be found in the UK. Not a single local supplier had what the bar needed, so we did what any self-respecting tiki fan would do — we made our own.

As luck would have it, one of our founders had real sculpting chops, the kind of hands that could turn a rough idea into something you’d want to drink a Mai Tai out of. That happy accident became our launchpad. We started dreaming up and hand-sculpting our own ceramic tiki mugs and cocktail vessels, and from there, a whole business built on handcrafted, tiki-loving drinkware was born.

Why Hand Sculpting Still Matters (Even in a High-Tech World)

Long before 3D printers and digital modeling came along, hand sculpting was simply how things got made — and it’s still at the heart of everything we do. This is where the magic really happens: before any mould is made and before any mug is cast, there’s one single, original sculpt, shaped entirely by hand. That master brings a level of detail, texture, and personality that no machine can fake. A digital file can be copied a thousand times over, but a hand-carved grin, a wonky-in-the-best-way curve, or a spontaneous swirl of texture? That only comes from real hands, real tools, and a whole lot of aloha spirit — and once it’s captured in that first sculpt, it carries through into every single mug cast from its mould.

Every design in our collection starts with that one original master, the result of careful planning and hours of hands-on, sleeves-rolled-up craftsmanship. Whether it’s destined for a limited-edition bar collection or a full production run, sculpting that one-off master is always the creative heartbeat of the process.

The Creative Journey Behind Every Master Sculpt

Step 1: Sketching the Concept

Every design starts life as a doodle. We sketch out ideas on paper, dreaming up the form, the features, and the personality of the piece before it becomes a real, one-off master sculpt destined for the mould room. This is where the fun really begins — letting the imagination run wild before a single tool touches clay or plaster.

Step 2: Two Hands-On Ways We Sculpt the Master

We lean on two main sculpting techniques to create that all-important original, and each one has its own island rhythm.

  1. Carving in Plaster

This method kicks off with a solid block of plaster shaped into a cone. From there, we grab our metal sculpting tools and start carving, working from rough shapes toward fine, tiki-tastic detail:

  • Texture and detail — specialized tools carve in lines, patterns, and decorative flourishes
  • Smoothing — wet and dry sandpaper polishes things up while the plaster sits submerged in water
  • Finishing touches — cheeky facial expressions and pattern work go on last, putting the final stamp of character on the master sculpt
  1. Hand Building in Clay

A more organic, hands-in-the-mud approach that starts with a simple lump of clay, shaped by hand into the mug’s basic form:

  • Forming — extra clay gets added to build up noses, brows, and other fun decorative motifs
  • Drying — the piece is loosely wrapped in plastic and left to rest and firm up for a day or two
  • Detailing — metal and plastic tools shape the piece and dial in the finer details
  • Smoothing — sponges smooth and clean the surface, a process that can take several island-time days before the piece is ready for the next stage

Step 3: From One-Off Master to Mould

Once the master sculpt is finished, it’s handed over to become the mould. This is the moment that one hand-crafted original gets to share its personality with the world: a mould is taken directly from the master, capturing every carved line, texture, and expressive detail. From that point on, every mug cast from the mould carries the character of that first hand-sculpted piece — so while production happens in batches, the artistry behind it all traces back to a single pair of hands.

Why Handmade Tiki Drinkware Is Worth Raising a Glass To

At its heart, hand sculpting is all about connection. It’s the human touch: the little variations in pressure, the feel of a tool gliding through clay, the happy accidents that give the original master its personality. Because every mug in a collection is cast from that one hand-sculpted original, that same warmth and character carries through to every piece — something that’s simply impossible to fake with a machine or a digital file. That’s what sets true hand-sculpted tiki mug designs apart from anything mass-produced or spat out by a printer.

Whether you’re a bar owner, a cocktail lover, or a die-hard collector, choosing drinkware that started life as a hand-sculpted master means you’re backing real craftsmanship — and bringing home a piece of island art with a story to tell.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you sculpt every single tiki mug by hand? No — and this trips people up! We hand-sculpt one original master for each design. That master is then used to create a mould, and every mug in that range is hand cast from it. So the artistry is 100% hand-crafted at the source, even though production happens in batches.

Why not just 3D print the master instead? We could — but it wouldn’t look or feel the same. Hand sculpting gives us organic texture, expressive detail, and happy little imperfections that digital modeling tends to iron out. For characterful tiki mugs, that human touch is the whole point.

How long does it take to hand-sculpt a master? It varies by design and complexity, but between sketching, sculpting, and smoothing, a single master can take anywhere from several days to a couple of weeks of hands-on work before it’s ready to go to mould.

Do you use the same technique for every design? Not always. Depending on the design, we’ll either carve the master from a plaster block or build it up from clay by hand — whichever technique suits the shape and detail we’re after.

Final Thoughts: Aloha to Creativity, Cheers to Craft

The art of hand sculpting continues to inspire everything we make. From our early days crafting mugs for Mahiki to our current lineup of custom tiki mugs and cocktail accessories, this hands-on, heart-led craft isn’t just part of our process — it’s part of who we are.

Explore our collection and see how hand-sculpted design brings a little more imagination, character, and tropical spirit to every cocktail. Cheers! 🌺
