We hold one of the only collections of vintage Tongan tapa cloth in Europe, so a piece like this is genuinely difficult to find outside the islands themselves.
This particular piece was carefully salvaged from a larger vintage sheet, originally sourced for a London tiki bar design project. It came to us from a private collector with family ties to Tonga, which gives us confidence in both its authenticity and its traditional origin.
A Centuries-Old Craft
Tapa cloth making is a genuine Polynesian art form, not a modern reproduction technique. Makers create it from the inner bark of island trees, which they hand-beat into sheets before decorating them with natural dyes. They still use the same centuries-old techniques today that generations of Polynesian artisans used before them.
Because every piece starts as hand-beaten bark rather than a manufactured material, no two are ever the same. Expect to see beautiful organic textures, layered fibres, and natural imperfections throughout. These aren’t flaws — they’re proof of a real, handmade cultural artefact, not a printed replica.
