Description

Tribal masks from Papua New Guinea weren’t always made to be worn, and would instead often be mounted on the fronts, or splashboards, of canoes. They represented one of the most important elements of the canoe for they were believed to provide special protection.
Produced in our own studios, this carving is based on just such a mask, is flat-backed for display only and is produced from burnt timber and finished in a way that replicates the effect created by the chalk and mud natural earth pigments that would have been used by the various tribes of PNG.
Design and finish may vary slightly from that depicted. No hanging point supplied.
